Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who can volunteer?

Anyone age 18 or older can volunteer after completing the Volunteer Approval Process.

2. Are other school/districts doing this?

Yes. Each school and district has its own volunteer policies and procedures in accordance with State Law.

3. Who needs to complete a background check?

Any volunteer who will be attending a field trip or working directly with or supervising students, either independently or in a small-group setting, must complete the background check process.

4How long does it take for a background check to come back approved?

Once you have completed the volunteer application and submitted the required background check paperwork, you will be directed to a third-party provider to complete fingerprinting. The approval process may take up to three weeks. GWA will cover all costs associated with the background check and fingerprinting.

5. What if I already have a background check from my work or other service?

GWA requires its own background check to ensure we can monitor any potential changes in an individual’s background over time.

6. What are they looking for in the background check?

The background check is used to identify any misdemeanor or felony offenses that may raise concerns regarding the safety and security of students.

7. Will I need to complete a Volunteer Application and Agreement Form and Background Check every year?

The Volunteer Agreement Form must be completed annually.

Once your background check has been completed and cleared, you will not need to be fingerprinted each year. However, if you request to have your name removed from the district’s volunteer list, you will need to complete the fingerprinting process again if you choose to volunteer in the future.

8. What should I wear as an official Volunteer?

We ask that you adhere to the GWA Faculty and Staff Dress Code. Please dress in neat, clean, and modest attire that sets a positive, respectful example for our students.

9. What if I need to just drop something off or I want to eat lunch with my child?

The typical visitor process of showing your ID at the office will apply.
